  ACADEMIC OVERVIEW
Take this opportunity to taste close to 500 wines, hone wine and food pairing skills, and see the wine making process up close. The program is delivered by an internationally recognized wine school – the Deutsche Wein und Sommelierschule (German Wine School). This hands-on sommelier course focuses on the wines of Europe, but includes a mix of old and new world products. Three weeks of lectures are delivered by 6-7 different experienced and internationally recognized professors. The course is intense, and students should expect to participate in evening reviews. Classes are augmented with one week of excursions to vineyards and wine cellars in the surrounding wine growing regions of France.

JWU Student Prerequisite Courses:
CUL2235 or FSM2055 or Department Chair approval

Non-JWU Student Prerequisite Courses:

Proof of completion of comparable courses must be presented through your application materials.

ACADEMIC FORMAT
Academic content is delivered by the program host, a JWU faculty member and guest lecturers. A chef from JWU's College of Culinary Arts serves as the program faculty leader and coordinates pre-departure information, travels with the group, coordinates with local hosts, and assigns the final grade for the program course.

The faculty leader will schedule pre-departure meetings to discuss the detailed program itinerary with the selected student group and outline any pre-departure assignments.

Learning on study abroad programs occurs both inside and outside of the classroom. During the program, you should expect to be in program-related activities 50-60 hours per week. Activities include traditional classroom lectures, labs, industry visits, cultural excursions, and group meals. You are required to participate in the full program itinerary and group activities.

HOUSING
Dorm style lodging, single occupancy, private bathrooms. Tourist class hotels, double occupancy, used during excursions. Towels and sheets provided.

MEALS
1-2 meals/day (typically breakfast and lunch) plus a welcoming reception and farewell dinner.

FLIGHTS
Flight parameters are set by Study Abroad to accommodate group logistics. Do not purchase any flight until the specific parameters are communicated to you via your Study Abroad ULearn site, usually 4 months prior to departure.


STUDENT CONDUCT
You must be in good standing with your campus's office of Student Conduct or Student Affairs for the dates of the program.

ORIENTATION
Each program has a mandatory orientation process which starts the term before your program starts. Failure to participate in the various meetings listed below may jeopardize your ability to participate in the program.


Pre-departure meetings vary according to the program model and typically include discussions, on-line resources, and assignments to ensure you understand your specific program, the courses, housing, costs and other related details. These meetings may be a combination of in-person and web-based meeting formats.

An in-person Study Abroad Retreat is scheduled on each campus with advertised dates, times, and locations to discuss topics relevant to all study abroad programs. 

An in-country Orientation is included upon arrival to your program for on-site information and program reminders.
