LOCATION

Galway, Ireland

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

On this exchange program, you will be a student of GMIT while also being registered at JWU. You will take academic courses taught by GMIT faculty. You will be able to participate in student activities, gain local knowledge of the area, and explore your host country. For the most part, outside of your course schedule, you are free to structure your experience to meet your personal goals.

PROGRAM SIZE

The number of participants varies each year.  Both JWU and the host university try to maintain a balance of incoming and outgoing students. Typically, expect that 1-5 JWU students could participate in any given exchange program each year. Keep in mind that participants may be there during different academic terms and may have very different course schedules. This is one of the reasons why these program are considered more independent and immersive than other program types.

AVAILABLE DATES *specific dates within host website

Fall Semester
Spring Semester

GMIT 2The host university sets its own academic calendar, which is typically available through its web site. Exchange students should expect to be at the host university for the full term of study, as well as arrive early for new student orientation and move-in activities.

JWU students take a Winter term Leave of Absence when participating in semester programs.

Due to the differences between quarters and semesters, when the dates of your exchange program or affiliate partner program include more than one regular JWU academic term (Fall, Winter, Spring), you will need to discuss a Leave of Absence with your financial counselor and academic planner in SAFS. The Leave of Absence is used when JWU students participate in a semester-based program whose Fall Semester extends into JWU's Winter Term or whose Spring Semester begins during JWU's Winter Term; in these cases, students only register for and are billed for one JWU term (Fall or Spring) and take a Leave of Absence for Winter Term.

The Leave of Absence will ensure that JWU understands your academic plans, maintains your student status, and protects your student loans from going into deferment.

ACADEMICS

Students select a degree program and year/class status at GMIT, which will determine the courses available for the student to take.

GMIT uses the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). The standard credit ratio is 6 ECTS credits = 4.5 JWU quarter credits. Students should plan to take 30 ECTS credits in one semester at GMIT, which is equivalent to 22.5 JWU quarter credits.  A 5 ECTS-credit course at GMIT may be able to equate to a specific 4.5-credit JWU course, depending upon the contact hours of the course abroad. As an entire course load, though, the ratio of 6 ECTS credits = 4.5 JWU quarter credits must be used. Therefore, even though a specific 5 ECTS-credit course at GMIT may be approved to fulfill a 4.5-credit JWU course, six 5-ECTS-credit courses (30 ECTS credits) would NOT be able to fulfill six 4.5-JWU-quarter-credit courses (27 JWU quarter credits) Rather, 30 ECTS credits can only fulfill a maximum of 22.5 JWU quarter credits.

How the credits of the exchange program can fulfill degree requirements depends on the total number of credits successfully completed abroad, the course content of the credits completed abroad, and the student's degree requirements.

Students planning to participate in this program should keep open any elective credits (such as Arts & Sciences, Career, Free, Hospitality, and Technology Electives) required for their degree because credits completed abroad can most easily fulfill elective credits.

A list of known credit/course equivalencies is available at the "Courses Offered" link in the fact sheet at the top of this page. If you would like to take courses abroad that do not appear on the list of known credit/course equivalencies, we will help you request a new course equivalency. You are required to complete a Study Abroad Exchange and Foreign Course Equivalency Form for your academic plan abroad in order to coordinate your plan with Study Abroad and SAS. Contact your Study Abroad Advisor for assistance in completing and submitting the course equivalency form.

Since host courses are not from the JWU catalog, you will schedule at JWU for a generic placeholder course that is holding the space for the host courses completed abroad. You will only be able to schedule for the placeholder course if you shared your final academic plan with SAS and official summary notes have been written in your JWU degree audit.

Upon completion of the program, the host will send an official transcript to JWU Study Abroad. Previously approved courses which are successfully passed will be applied to the JWU transcript as transfer credit. The typical timeline for your JWU transcript to be updated is 3-5 months.

ACADEMIC PREREQUISITES

The host university may or may not have prerequisite requirements for their courses. You can see JWU's prerequisites for our equivalent courses listed in the "Courses Offered" area in the section above the fact sheet at the top of this brochure.

HOUSING

GMIT does not offer on-campus housing. Students typically stay in student villages in the surrounding area. More info is available on GMIT's housing page.

GMIT 3MEALS

Students are responsible for their own meals while on the program.

Please see GMIT's cost of living guide to best budget for the program.

STUDENT CONDUCT

You must be in good standing with your campus's office of Student Conduct or Student Affairs for the dates of the program.

ORIENTATION

Each program has a mandatory orientation process which starts the term before your program starts. Failure to participate in the various meetings listed below may jeopardize your ability to participate in the program.

Pre-departure meetings vary according to the program model and typically include discussions, on-line resources, and assignments to ensure you understand your specific program, the courses, housing, costs and other related details. These meetings may be a combination of in-person and web-based meeting formats.

An in-person Study Abroad Retreat is scheduled on each campus with advertised dates, times, and locations to discuss topics relevant to all study abroad programs.

An in-country Orientation is included upon arrival to your program for on-site information and program reminders.
