Program Description:
Petition Process for International Academic Programs Outside Johnson & Wales University
If a student locates a study abroad program that is not offered through Johnson & Wales University, the program is considered unaffiliated and the student must petition for approval to have the credits transfer back to Johnson & Wales.  An unaffiliated program is created, delivered, and monitored by an institute or separate university without any oversight by Johnson & Wales University.  In choosing this process, students will not be enrolled in JWU Study Abroad courses while on the chosen program and will not be paying tuition at JWU.  However, with prior approval of the academic plan, JWU will allow successful completion of unaffiliated program courses to satisfy specific JWU graduation requirements.  It is important to plan ahead.  It will likely take 4-6 months prior to your departure to coordinate your JWU academic plan and receive approvals for your planned transfer (TR) credits.

Acceptance into an unaffiliated study abroad program is determined by the program host, not JWU. Contact your chosen program and inquire about its application requirements.
There is a $35 Application Fee paid to Johnson & Wales University as part of the online petition process.

Upon approval of the academic plan, there is a $500 Study Abroad Petition Fee paid to Johnson & Wales as part of the online study abroad pre-departure process.

Payments are made via the Tuition Management System (TMS) by credit card or electronic check. All other program costs are managed directly by the program's host institution. Please be advised JWU financial aid may not be applicable to unaffiliated study abroad programs.

The specific course descriptions and options provided on the chosen program are described on the host website.  It is important to plan how the courses abroad will be applied towards your JWU degree.

Study Abroad will help you request a course equivalency for the host courses you have identified.  You are required to complete a Study Abroad Exchange and Foreign Course Equivalency Form for your academic plan abroad in order to coordinate your plan with Study Abroad and SAS.  Contact your Study Abroad Advisor for assistance in completing and submitting the course equivalency form.

Upon completion of the program, the host will send an official transcript to JWU Study Abroad.  Previously approved courses which are successfully passed will be applied to the JWU transcript as transfer credit.  The typical timeline for your JWU transcript to be updated is 3-5 months.

  1. Meet with a study abroad advisor on your respective campus. Your advisor will review the portfolio of approved study abroad programs as alternatives to an unaffiliated program with you.
  2. Complete the JWU Petition Program Application by clicking the Apply Now button.
  3. Establish your academic plan by starting the Study Abroad Exchange and Foreign Course Equivalency Form.*NOTE: A weblink or electronic course description and/or complete syllabus must be submitted with this form for each of the international courses.
  4. Please be aware that the application process will require you to provide the following information:
    1. Name of Program and basic description of program (summer, semester, etc.)
    2. Location (country and city)
    3. University or institution hosting the program
    4. Host program/institution contact information (address, phone, and specific contact person)
    5. Detailed information about the academics/experiences delivered on the program including: number of contact hours, number of credits, specific course(s) and details course description(s), confirmation that a transcript will be provided at program completion
    6. Web link to program description (if applicable)

The Study Abroad Office will review your initial inquiry and offer initial study abroad advising. Remember, all outside courses must first be given a JWU equivalent by an International Credentials Evaluator before a course may be counted towards a JWU degree credit or graduation requirement.  If an equivalency has not been approved, foreign credits will not be transferred until the below steps have been completed.  Carefully read and follow the steps below to request a JWU equivalency for an outside study abroad course:
  1. Schedule an appointment with your Academic Counselor to discuss your study abroad intentions and initial academic plan.
  2. Complete the Study Abroad Exchange and Foreign Course Equivalency Form in conjunction with your Academic Counselor.
  3. Share final academic plan with your Study Abroad Advisor. The form and subsequent weblinks/attached documents will be forwarded to an International Credentials Evaluator to assess the requested equivalencies.
  4. Once course equivalencies have been decided, the Providence Study Abroad office will return the form to you with the approval/denials.
  5. The completed form should be taken back to your Academic Counselor for notations to be made on your GPS which will formally document with SAS what JWU courses you intend to satisfy with your international courses.  This is the ONLY way your international academic plan gets communicated to anyone looking at your GPS.

KEEP IN MIND: Petition students will NOT be scheduled for any JWU course or place holder course. Students will apply to their outside program and will only be accepted if the credits abroad can actually be used. This can cause a longer application processing timeline.

Once your Petition Program Application has been accepted through JWU Study Abroad
  • Complete all other necessary items as listed on the Study Abroad Portal
  • Attend the Study Abroad Pre-departure Retreat
  • You will be automatically enrolled in International Health Insurance
