Semester at Sea is a multiple country study abroad program open to students of all majors emphasizing comparative academic examination, hands-on field experiences, and meaningful engagement in the global community. A wide variety of coursework from 20-25 disciplines is integrated with relevant field studies in up to a dozen countries, allowing for a comparative study abroad experience that is truly global. Colorado State University is Semester at Sea's academic partner. Students from 250-300 colleges in the United States and the world participate on Semester at Sea each term. Credit earned is transferable to a student’s home institution.
Our mission is to educate students with the global understanding necessary to address the challenges of our interdependent world. With the world as our classroom, our unique shipboard program integrates multiple-country study, interdisciplinary coursework, and hands-on field experiences for meaningful engagement in the global community. Our mission, vision, strategy, and core values are rooted in student success and global comparative education. We take pride in our participants’ achievements, spanning back to our first voyage in 1963.

JWU Academic Planning For This Program

Fall Semester
Spring Semester

JWU students may have a Winter Term Away when participating in semester programs. A winter term away means that you will not be registered at JWU during the winter term but that you have a plan to register for the following term.

If the dates of your exchange program or affiliate partner program use the semester calendar, this means that it includes more than one regular JWU academic term (Fall, Winter, Spring). You will need to discuss this term away with your Academic Counselor and Financial Planner in SAFS. This will ensure that JWU understands your academic plans, maintains your student status, and protects your student loans from going into deferment. When participating in a semester study abroad, you only register for and are billed for one JWU term (Fall or Spring) and do not register for classes for Winter Term. All students should be aware of their study abroad program’s dates and how they relate to JWU's academic calendar.

The specific course descriptions and options are described on the host website.  It is important to plan how the courses abroad will be applied towards your JWU degree.

Total Credit Hours Earned Abroad On This Program:
  • 12 semester credits (18 quarter credits)
You will work with your academic counselor in JWU's Student Academic Services (SAS) to identify which courses taken abroad can fulfill JWU degree requirements.

A list of known credit/course equivalencies is available at the "Courses Offered" link in the fact sheet at the top of this page. If you would like to take courses abroad that do not appear on the list of known credit/course equivalencies, we will help you request a new course equivalency.  Because the School of Record for Semester at Sea is Colorado State University, it is important to complete the
Request to Take Courses Elsewhere-Study Abroad form with your local Student Academic Services.  A final copy with an SAS signature is submitted to your local Study Abroad Advisor.  You are invited to talk with your Study Abroad Advisor to ensure you understand the process and the need for the form.

Upon completion of the program, the affiliate provider will send an official transcript from the host institution to JWU Study Abroad. Previously approved courses will be applied to your JWU transcript for credit toward your JWU degree. Note: Only courses which have already been designated with a JWU equivalency and in which a grade of "C" or higher has been earned will be allowed to transfer into JWU.

The inside-double housing option has been selected as the default housing option included in the JWU package for this program.  Any upgrade in the housing, by choice or by room availability, will be covered at your personal expense and will need to be paid directly to Semester at Sea.

To participate in this program and receive credit toward your JWU degree, you must complete the following steps:
  1. Submit a JWU Study Abroad application by clicking "apply now" at the top or bottom of this page.  Applications will not be reviewed until the $25 application fee is submitted.
  2. Complete thRequest to Take Courses Elsewhere-Study Abroad form and submit copy with SAS signature to Study Abroad.
  3. Study Abroad reviews your JWU application and will "Accept" your application if all minimum eligibility requirements have been met*. (*Final acceptance into the program only comes from the program affiliate partner directly.)
  4. Complete the affiliate partner's application, available on its web site. JWU and the program host have separate application systems.  Please be advised that there may be duplicate information requested.
  5. Make all program payments, such as tuition, directly to JWU.
  6. Follow the instructions of both JWU and the affiliate partner for participation in this program.
  7. Request your official study abroad program transcript be sent to JWU Study Abroad.
Each JWU campus has a mandatory pre-departure retreat with scheduled dates, times, and locations. Failure to participate in the orientation may jeopardize your ability to participate in the program.
